HERNANDEZ, LETICIA, ROJALES. Don Severino Agricultural College, indang, Cavite, April 1993. Effects of the Department of Agriculture Assisted Rice Program in Selected Barangays of Tayabas, Quezon. Adviser g Dr. Anastacia M. Bayas.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of the Department of Agriculture Assisted Rice Program in selected barangays of Tayabas, Quezon. Specifically, the study sought to determine 1) the socio-demographic characteristics of the farmer-beneficiaries; 2) the rice farmers' aspirations for themselves, their children, families, livelihood, and community; 3) the respondents' level of participation on the program; 4) the relationship between some selected socio-demographic characteristics and levels of aspirations and
participation; and 5) respondents' level of aspirations in the Department of Agriculture Assisted Rice Program in relation to their level of participation. Personal interviews with 87 farmer beneficiaries under the DA Assisted Rice Program were made using interview schedules.

The 11 selected barangays of Tayabas, Quezon were as follows; Ibabang Nangka, Patol, Wakas, Malaoa, Camaysa, Baguio, Ayaas, Tambong, Ipilan, Ilayang Ilasan and Silanganq Katigan. Frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to describe the general characteristics of the respondents and to summarize the data Chi-square test was used to determine the significant relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and level of aspirations/level of participation in the DA Assisted Rice Program using five percent and one percent levels of significance. The findings showed that majority of the farmer-beneficiaries were male, married and with a mean age of 44.47 years. About 33.33 percent had finished high school. Most had a nuclear type of household with one to four children and a mean household size of 5.26. Majority of the respondents had been in farming for more than 21 years.

The respondents' maximum number of contact with the program personnel was five times per month while the least number of contact was once in a cropping season. The combined results of the four indicators used to test the level of aspirations showed that the respondents had "high" level of aspirations for their children, family life, livelihood and community life. The type of household and household size were significantly related with the respondents' level of aspiration. The bigger the household size/type, the higher was the level of aspirations.
|
