<br/>CANARIA, JOSE CLACIO. Don Severino Agricultural College, May 1994. An Assessment of the Training Needs of Farmers in the CALABARZON Areas. Major Adviser: Dr. Anastacia M. Bayas<br/><br/>The study was conducted in the provinces of Cavite and Laguna to identify the perceived training needs of farmers in the CALABARZON areas, specifically to: 1) identify the personal characteristics of farmers in the CALABARZON province; 2) identify the subject matters and particular topics needed by the farmers for trainings; 3) assess special preferences of farmers as to methods, manner, organization to conduct, duration and location of any training program that may be developed for them; 4) find the relationship between farmers” characteristics and their perceived between the personal characteristics of farmers and their perceived training needs.<br/><br/>Three hundred farmer respondents were selected through random sampling and were interviewed using an interview schedule.<br/><br/>The data were analyzed using central tendency and Chi-square tests with 5% level of significance. Eighty five percent (85%) of the farmer respondents were male with a mean age of 50 years. Most of them (80.66%) were married. About 65.66% had reached at least intermediate level of education with a mean of 6 years informal schooling. Farmers were generally well experienced with a mean of 25 years worked experience.<br/><br/>Around 65% of the respondents were residents in the area for 21 to 60 years, 24% were residents for 61 years and above, and only 10% were residents for 1-20 years.<br/><br/>Respondents differed significantly in their perception of training needs in four subject matters and particular topics.<br/><br/>The respondents preferred lecture with demonstration methods on livestock production, crop production and on processing. Sixty-six percent (66%) of the respondents opted for lecture with demonstration and 33.8% chose pure practicum and -demonstration.<br/><br/>Live out seminar was the preferred manner for manpower skills. Eighty percent, 85.2% and 74.4% desired live-out seminar in livestock production, crop production and in processing, respectively. On the other hand, 20%, 14.98% and 25.6% liked live-in seminar on livestock production, crop production and on processing, respectively.<br/> |
