Summary, etc. |
CANLAS, JOSE T. JR., Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1993. Economic Yield of Baby Corn intercropped with Sweet Potato, Qkra, and Bush Sitao as Affected by Different Levels of Nitrogen Fertilizer, Major Adviser: Dr. Eusebio V. Alava Sr. and Prof. Julio G. Alava. This study was conducted to 1) determine the recommended levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the productivity of baby corn under monocropping and intercropping combinations; 2) evaluate the effects of different intercrops on the growth and yield of baby corn and; 3) identify the most suitable intercrops for baby corn at certain levels of nitrogen fertilizer under upland Quezon condition with reference to cost and return analysis.

Results revealed that baby corn grown in monoculture had significantly taller plant at all stages of growth, biggest and largest corn cobs, highest Leaf Area {[ndex, total dry matter yield, fresh weight of corn cobs. And computed yield per hectare. Likewise, significant differences were noted for Leaf Area Index, total dry matter yield, diameter and length of corn cobs, and number of corn cobs per plot as affected by nitrogen levels and intercropping treatments.

Results further indicated that both the main crop and the component crops had a decline in yield in all intercropping combinations regardless of the nitrogen levels tested. Likewise, when sweet potato, okra and bush sitao grown in between the rows of baby corn all crops involved in combinations gave a significantly lower yield suggesting a severe interplant competition for all the factors affecting growth and development.

With regard to intercropping, the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) and yield efficiency of various intercropping treatments were significantly higher in baby corn + bush sitao combination.

Considering the net profit obtained from different intercropping treatments, baby corn + bush sitao with 250 kgm of N per hectare gave the highest net return among at! the intercropping combinations. The lowest net profit was obtained from baby corn + okra intercropping combinations.

|
