VIDALLO, MA. GRACE SAN JOSE. Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1 1996. "DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A ROTARY CONDUCTION DRUM DRYER FOR COFFEE”. Adviser: Dr. Marilyn M. Escobar.<br/><br/>A rotary conduction drum dryer was constructed in Población, Indang, Cavite and was evaluated at the Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite from January to February 1996. Specifically, it aimed to develop a rotary conduction drum dryer; determine the drying rate of parchment coffee employing intermittent drying; evaluate the advantages of using intermittent drying procedures for coffee drying; test the machine performance; and its cost and return.<br/>The dryer consists of the following machine members: drying cylinder, cylinder cover, detachable hopper, burner assembly, sample container and frame and stand assembly.<br/>The rotary conduction drum dryer was evaluated using parchment coffee, dried at three different angular speeds of 15- 16 rpm, 19-20 and 24-25 rpm. The drying air temperatures used were 90 0 C for the first two hours, 80 0 C for the next two hours and 60 0 C onwards until it reached the desired moisture content of parchment coffee using wood charcoal.<br/><br/>Results showed that the cylinder angular speed and drying temperature affect the drying t time, drying rate and fuel consumption of parchment coffee.<br/>Best result was obtained using the angular speed of 15—16 rpm giving the shortest drying time, the Least fuel consumption, and the greatest moisture reduction per unit of time. Cylinder angular speeds of 15—16 rpm, 19—20 rpm and 24—25 rpm gave an average drying time of 13 hours, 15 hours and 25 hours, respectively, and fuel consumption rate of 0.95 kilograms, 1. 14 kilograms and 1.78 kilograms, respectively.<br/>The cost of the dryer was P 7, 397.00. It has annual gross revenue of P 5, 959. 18.<br/>Payback period of the dryer was computed to be 1.2 years while the break—even point was 1,064.70 hours per year - The dryer has a benefit—cost ratio of 1. 1. Results indicate that the dryer is applicable for small scale drying operations.<br/> |
