GALLEGO, CORAZON CORTEZ,. Cavite State University, April 1998. Acceptability of Certified Seeds under Grain Production Enhancement Program in Selected Municipalities of Quezon. Major Adviser: Dr. Leonora A. Mojica.

The study was conducted mainly to assess the level of acceptability of certified seeds under Grain Production Enhancement Program in Selected Municipalities of Quezon. Specifically, it aimed to 1) determine the general characteristics of the farmers involved in the certified seeds component of the Grain Production Enhancement Program, 2) determine the general characteristics of the farm tilled by the rice farmers involved in the certified seeds, 3) ascertain the level of acceptability of certified seeds, 4) determine the factors influencing the farmers’ level of acceptability of certified seeds; 5) determine the benefits derived from using certified seeds and 6) determine the problems encountered by the farmers with the use of certified seeds.

This study had 339 respondents from five selected municipalities of Quezon. The data were gathered through personal interviews.

Findings showed that the majority of the respondents were middle aged, married and had elementary education. Almost all of the farmers had farming as their major occupation, and more than one half had a small household size ranging from two to five members.

Likewise, the findings revealed that almost all of the farmers were members of farmers’ organization and attended agriculture-related seminar/trainings.

Majority of them were leasehold and share tenants and one-half had a relatively long experience in farming and in growing rice.

The size of the farm being cultivated and planted to rice by the majority of the farmers were considered “small”. The mean production/yield per hectare was 96 cavans.

Findings also revealed that the majority of the farmers were considered to have an average level of acceptability. “High production or yield” was the most frequently mentioned benefit derived by farmers from using certified seeds while “availability of seeds” was the most frequently mentioned problem encountered by the farmers.

The correlation test showed that membership in organization, attendance to seminar/training, experience in farming, size of farm being cultivated, size of farm planted to rice, and production/yield per hectare were found to have significant relationship with level of acceptability.

|
