LARA, NOEL LORETO. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 1999. "Fruit Characters of Avocado (Persea americana Mill) Accessions in Upland Cavite". Adviser: Prof. Adolfo Manuel Jr. <br/>The study determined the variability in qualitative and quantitative fruit characters of nine avocado accessions collected in upland Cavite. Each accession was assigned as a treatment. Each treatment consisted of six sample fruits taken randomly from ten representative fruits and were replicated three times. Data on quantitative fruit characters were subjected to analysis of variance following the Completely Randomized Des (CRD) and differences among treatment means were determined using Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). <br/>Accessions 1, 2, 6, 7, and 9 were identified as promising accessions for breeding desirable fruit characters. Accession 9 obtained the highest rating of 49% in the qualitative characters while accessions 3, 4 and 8 obtained the lowest (40%). Accessions 7 and 9 got the highest total rating while accession 5 obtained the lowest. Loose seed in the cavity and fruit color were the common least desirable characteristics of the 5 accessions. In addition, accessions 7 and 9 have the least desirable fruit shape. The nine accessions differed significantly in terms of quantitative characters evaluated. Among the quantitative characters, average fruit polar diameter obtained the highest variability among accessions as indicated by high F-value. <br/>Other characters such as average fruit weight, average peel weight, average pulp weight, average seed weight, average seed polar diameter, and average seed equatorial diameter also had significant variability among accessions. Accessions 5 and 7 had the highest percent moisture content while accessions 2, 3 and 4 had the lowest. Accessions 4 and 7 produced the highest and lowest total soluble solids, respectively. The highest crude fat (oil) was obtained in accession 8 while accession 6 had the lowest. Accessions 6 and 3 produced the highest and lowest crude fiber, respectively. <br/> |
