College of Arts and Sciences, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2018. Adviser: Dr. Yolanda A. Ilagan. <br/>Amorphophallus campanulatus (Roxb.) Blume is a perennial herb with rounded tuberous stock and widely distributed in Bangladesh, India, Africa and Philippines. It was known for its therapeutic capabilities as treatment for piles, abdominal pain, tumors, enlargement of spleen asthma and rheumatism. The study aimed to determine the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of extract from A. campanulatus. Decoction, crude juice, methanol and dichloromethane extracts were obtained from corm and leaves of the plant were screened for antimicrobial activities through disk diffusion assay against bacterial organisms E.coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and B. subtlis and fungal test organisms C. albicans, A. niger and T. mentagrophytes. <br/><br/>Crude juice extracts have the highest percent yield followed by methanol, dichloromethane and decoction. Decoction of the leaves showed inhibitory activity againsts E. coli whereas E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were found to be susceptible to the methanol extract of the leaves. On the contrary, all extracts does not exhibit antifungal properties. <br/><br/>The cytotoxic activities of the decoction and methanol extract were tested through hemolysis assay and measured using spectrophotometer at 540nm. The absorbance of free hemoglobin in the samples showed that both decoction and methanol extracts have weak hemolytic activity against sheep blood.<br/> <br/>Keywords: Amorphophallus campanulatus, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, disk diffusion<br/> |
