GUIANG, EZEKIEL B. and HERNAN, FRENILYN P. Social Media Usage and Family Communication of selected Self-confessed Online Enthusiasts: A Case Study. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Thesis Adviser Prof. Racquel G. Agustin, MC.
This study was conducted to determine how social media usage affects family communication of selected self-confessed online enthusiasts. Specifically, it aimed to determine the level of exposure and the level of utilization toward social media; and determine the family communication pattern/s of self-confessed online enthusiasts. The descriptive-explanatory method of research and in-depth interviews were used for the data gathering. The research instrument which was a 20-item guide questions were validated by the three experts in the field. The eight participants were composed of one female student and one male student per year level The criteria were based on the following' (1) must be currently studying in Cavite State University-Main Campus; ( ) must be an active user of social media already even before entering college; (3) must be an active user of at least 3 or more social media accounts; (4) must be using social networking sites for nine hours or more in a day; (5) must have the willingness to be interviewed and be part of the research. The researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with all the participants. The interviews e e recorded transcribed and analyzed. All the data were gathered from December 2018 to January 2019. Based on the results of the interview, it was found out that the selected self-confessed online enthusiasts had a moderate to high exposure from three to six social media applications with an average of 9 to 11 hours a day spent online. The selected self on essed online enthusiasts preferred phones in using social media with a high utilization o social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. The most dominant type of family communication patterns of selected self-confessed online enthusiasts was consensual family type. It proved that social media usage had no effect on children-parent relationship because the parents were still the final decision makers and the children still valued their instructions. This resulted to having low conflict among the family unit.
|
