Summary, etc. MOJICA, EVELYN MOJICA, " Income and Expenditure Patterns of Factory Workers in Selected Towns of Cavite", Bachelor of Science in Economics, major in Development Economics, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, March 2000. Adviser: Dr. Luzviminda A. Rodrin.
A study was conducted to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the factory workers in selected towns of Cavite, their present level of income, and their expenditure patterns according to their income level. Moreover, the study aimed to ascertain the extent of their income contribution of income of the factory workers to their family income and determine the problems they have encountered in the allocation of income to various expenditure items.
The study was conducted in selected towns of Cavite namely: Alfonso, Amadeo, Silang, Rosario and Tanza. A total of 105 respondents were obtained by means of convenience sampling. Data were collected through the use of semi-structured questionnaire which were distributed to the factory workers.
The data were analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentage, mean, range and rank.
Majority of the factory workers were female (51 %). Their mean age was 27 and most of them only finished high school (68 %). The respondents' mean an income was only P 6, 476 per month and receive a mean family income of P 11,886 per month.
Fifty- three percent of the respondents belong to the low- income group receiving only P 2,000 to P 6,000 monthly while 43 percent of the respondents contributed 51 to 75 percent to their total family income.
The respondents mostly spent their money on food (38 %), education (17 %) and clothing (14 %). They also spent on utilities (13 %), household needs (7 %), health and medical care (7 %), personal accessories and cosmetics (2 %). They least spent their money on personal services like manicure, pedicure, haircut and other beauty services (2 %).
Results of the study show that an increase in income of the family corresponds a decrease in income spent for food while the amount for non-food items was constantly increasing.
The respondents mentioned that the low salary was the main problem in the allocation of their income in various expenditure patterns.
