Anacay, Shirley Bernal “Production and Marketing of Buko Pie in Los Banos, Laguna", B.S. Thesis, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Dr. Antonio G. Papa. <br/>A study was conducted in Los Baños, Laguna to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the buko pie makers, determine the production and marketing practices employed in the business, determine the profitability of the business, identify the different constraints in the production and marketing of buko pie and recommend solutions to these constraints. There were 10 buko pie makers/producers in Los Baños, Laguna who were interviewed from December 1998 to January 1999. The data gathered where based from the production figures in 1998. The age of the respondents ranged from 23-42 with an average of 35 years. Majority of the respondents (70%) were college degree holders. The household size of the respondents ranged from I to 9 with an average of 4 members. The average years of experience in managing buko pie business was fifteen years. The production practices employed by the respondents included procurement of buko and raw materials, cutting and shredding of buko meat, preparing the buko pie fillings, preparing the pie crust, cooking of buko pie and packaging. On the marketing aspect, the buko pie producers adopted direct method of selling. Most of the respondents sell the product in their store along the highway. Prices of buko pie were competitive at P 60.00 and P 65.00 per box. The stores are open every day and during holidays. <br/>The average sales of buko pie amounted to P 374,400.00 while the average net profit was P 107, 11 8.27. The small scale buko pie industry attained a net profit of P 20,319.67; medium scale buko pie industry gained P 37,906.14 and large scale buko pie industry obtained P 48,892.49 for production season. <br/>The number one problem in the production was instability of demand, followed by high cost of raw materials, procurement and transportation of buko strips and lack of new technology know-how. In marketing, their major problems were stiff competition followed by mislabeling of other product, lack of marketing channel and discount or "tawaran" system. <br/> |
