Cavite State University,<br/>Indang, Cavite. April, 2002. Adviser: Dr. Evelyn O. Singson.<br/><br/>The study aimed to determine the presence of lectin on different species of lepidopterous larvae and<br/>compare lectin dependency on temperature and calcium ion. A 3x7x2x2 factor factorial experiment was<br/>laid out using a Completely Randomized Design with three replications.<br/><br/>The study was conducted at the Crop Protection Laboratory, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite and<br/>Institute of Chemistry of the Philippines, Los Banos, College, Laguna from October 2001 to January 2002.<br/>Through hemagglutination assay, lectin was detected on three species of lepidopterous larvae using<br/>different human blood group and animal blood.<br/><br/>The detected lectin belongs to a non-specific lectin that agglutinates cells without regards of their origin<br/>(either species or blood group). Among the three species, Plutella xylostella showed the highest lectin<br/>activity followed by Hippotion sp. and Papilio eurymedon.<br/><br/>Lectins from Plutella xylostella and Papilio eurymedon belongs to a non C-type lectins and non cold<br/>agglutinins while Hippotion sp is a C-type lectin for specific human blood group B and AB and is a cold<br/>agglutinins on human blood group B and O. |
