Summary, etc. ADAN, ARJULE JYRA R., NIPAY PAOLO D., PENALES, SCOTHIE CARL B. Lived Experiences of Fortune Tellers in Upland Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. June 2018. Adviser: Imelda R. Filart, RPm.
The study aimed an in depth analysis of the Lived Experiences of Fortune Tellers in Upland Cavite. Specifically, it attempted to answer the question, how does fortune telling affects the lives of the fortune tellers. Qualitative research design was used in this study. It utilized Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Also, a qualitative approach was applicable and considered more pertinent in this research.
The researchers used the Purposive Sampling Method, in line with Snow Ball Sampling. It was conducted and undertaken among eight (8) chosen fortune tellers who are residents of Upland Cavite. The researchers chose to interview fortune tellers aged between 50 to 75 years old with at least ten years of experience in doing fortune telling. Pre-surveys, interview guides, observations and the audio recorded interview were the primary sources used in this study to obtain necessary information that supported its objectives. On the other hand, books, published research studies, and other electronic articles such as journals and articles from e-libraries were the secondary sources used in this study. Significantly, the obtained data from the secondary sources supported the research objectives and its background. Mobile phone was used as a recorder for the interview. This study utilized a semi-structured interview, conducted with a series of questions. The questions were mainly open-ended questions with a small number of closed questions relating to information's such as age, length of fortune telling and so on. The researchers presented similar set of questions. The participants were interviewed on their respective home and workplace to acquire more factual and concrete information. The researchers have first visited the prospective participants that were referred for their approval by giving them informed consent letter. Likewise, after the discussion, the researchers summarized and processed all the information, for the clear ups, and clarifications of the participants. Nonetheless, the days of meeting with the participants varied depending on their preference of time and place. After the general gathering of data, the researchers gave token to the participants and take reasonable steps to correct all the misleading and misconceptions they have through debriefing. The results revealed that fortune tellers perceived fortune telling as a means to help people, and to gain help from the people. They help and serve with all their hearts and the praises they got from doing so were considered to be a positive experience for them. Aside from this, they experienced negative things from the people who were against with their belief as well as those who show enviousness to them. Throughout their careers, there were moments when they felt happy and good for the things they had experienced. However, there were also times when they felt upset. Surprisingly, those experiences taught them to utilize their unique coping techniques they practiced. Despite the things they had experienced, some of them chose to continue their beliefs throughout their lives, some chose to transfer it to someone else, and some chose to discontinue fortune telling. The researchers therefore concluded that fortune telling holistically affects their lives in a good way.
