Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, December 2018, Adviser: Emmanuel R. Mago, DVM, MS. <br/>Babesiosis is caused by tick-borne, protozoan hemoparasites of the genus Babesia. Babesia bigernina and Babesia bovis are the main agents responsible for bovine babesiosis. Those agent do not survive outside its hosts and can only be transmitted through a tick vector. The main vectors of Babesia are Rhipicephalus spp. A total of one hundred (100) whole blood samples were collected from cattle in the different farms from the province of Cavite. DNA samples from whole blood were extracted using the PREP DNA/RNA kit (Life Science, Germany). All one hundred (100) whole blood samples were tested positive for mammalian actin gene that were served as the internal control of the study. Out of the one hundred (100) whole blood samples positive for mammalian actin gene, only three (3) samples tested positive for (Babesia sp.) bearing an amplicon around 1500 bp. The whole blood samples came from a single farm in Brgy. Calubcob Naic, Cavite. The Babesia sp. positive samples were further tested into Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis specific primers and the results were negative.<br/> |
