520 3# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. DETABALI, ROY PATRICK G. Antimicrobial Activity of Talampunay (Datura metal) Bark Extract, Undergraduate Thesis, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, indang, Cavite, May 2019. Adviser: Nelson J. Montlaito, DVM, MS. This study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity of Datum metel bark extracts on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherlchla coil and Aspergillus niger cultures using agar well diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the ability of the extract to be bactericidal/fungicidal or bacteriostatic/fungistatic against the selected bacteria and fungi were also determined. Results indicated that D. metel bark extract in various concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) is able to produce zones of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger isolates but unable to produce inhibition on Escherichia coll. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) for S. aureus, B. subtilis and A. niger are 20mg/ml, 10mg/m1 and 10mg/mi, respectively. A. niger. Concentrations at 10 and 20 mg/ml are bacteriostatic in B. subtilis. These results suggest that D. metel bark extracts have antimicrobial activities with the potential to be used as microbial control options against the selected microorganisms. This study provided In vitro results only and did not cover the tests on mammalian hosts to determine the plant's toxicity levels. More clinical research is needed to test the effect of D, motel bark extract In vivo. In addition, the phytochemical and fractional analysis of the bark extracts should be carried out as well as the determination of the mechanism of action of each phytochemical fractions.
