GERONIMO, JOANA R., and LASCANO, PATRICK JOHN D. Disaster Risk Reduction Practices of Selected Rice Plantations in Lowland Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis Manuscript. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Operations Management, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, June 2019. Adviser: Ms. Maria Cristina Desepida.
The study covered the selected rice plantations in lowland Cavite namely Imus, General Trias, Tanza, Naic and Maragondon from October 2018 to February 2019. It assessed the disaster risk reduction practices being applied by the rice farmers. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the socioeconomic profile of the rice farmers, the disaster risk reduction practices of every municipality in Cavite, to analyze the significant relationship of the socio-economic profile and disaster risk reduction practices in selected rice plantation in Cavite and to determine the effect of disaster risk reduction practices in the livelihood of rice farmers of selected rice plantations in Cavite. Descriptive, correlational and causal research designs were utilized and 101 rice farmers from the selected rice plantations in lowland Cavite participated in the study. Descriptive statistical tools were used to analyze descriptively the socioeconomic profile of rice farmers including their age, size of their farm, average rice yield, average monthly family income, and their social participation in agricultural extension projects. The disaster risk reduction practices that included technological developments, government programs and insurance, farm production practices, and farm financial management being practiced by the farmers were analyzed descriptively as well. The Pearson's R correlational to test the relationship and ordered logistic regression to determine the effects of disaster risk reduction practices of selected rice plantations in lowland Cavite. The result revealed that the socioeconomic profile of monthly family income had a positive relationship with the community-based early warning system and inverse relationship with the choice of changing the rice production seasonal calendar, rice growing technique and irrigation practice, whereas, size of the farm as well as the average rice yield per season had a positive relationship with the irrigation practice. Lastly, access to agricultural extension services had a positive relationship with the choice and use of hybrid rice variety and crop diversification. Likewise, the hybrid seed showed an effect in terms of economic efficiency as well as crop diversification in terms of production efficiency. The researchers highly recommended to greatly intensify crop diversification and usage of hybrid seeds as it showed an effect to the economic and production efficiency to the livelihood of rice farmers. However, other practices such as crop insurance, community-based early warning signals, irrigation, changing seasonal and growing techniques and credit facilities must actualize and improve in order for the farmers to utilize their present resources and achieve success.
|
