Summary, etc. |
CAÑA, VANNESA JANE L., and HERNANDEZ, DAREN FAITH I. Green Mussel Shell as Partial Substitute to Fine Aggregates and Chips to Terrazzo Tiles. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Engr. Roslyn P. Pala
The study of Green Mussel Shell as Partial Substitute to Fine Aggregates and Chips For Terrazzo Tiles was conducted from August 2018 to June 2019. It aimed to utilize green mussel shells and used it as fine aggregate and decorative chips in producing terrazzo tiles. Specifically, the design project aimed to: 1. Utilize green mussel shells as substitute to sand and marble chips in terrazzo tile making; 2. determine the most economical proportion of mussel shells and sand to produce terrazzo tiles; 3. test the compressive strength of terrazzo tile mortar from different proportions of mussel shells and sand in 3, 7 and 28 days curing periods; and 4. compare the terrazzo tile made of Green mussel shells to commercially available tiles in terms of physical properties such as appearance and texture. The compressive test of mortar cubes showed that treatment 3 with 90 % sand and 10 % mussel shell obtained the highest compressive strength having 19.13 MPa which almost reached the required compressive strength of 20 MPa. As per the cost analysis, the study also showed that treatment 3 is the most economical among all the treatments. It only costs P 11.82 per tiles. Green mussel shell as partial substitute to fine aggregate in the production of terrazzo tiles is more economical and can outdo the behaviour of commercial terrazzo tiles from impact. Furthermore, a percentage of mussel shell not exceeding 15% replacement to fine aggregates for mortar can obtain a compressive strength of 2500 Psi which can be used
for below grade load-bearing masonry work and for chimneys, brick manholes, retaining walls, sewers, brick walkways, brick pavement and brick patios. Thus, using green mussel shells as replacement to marble chips is not viable. Nevertheless using it as partial substitute to fine aggregates is feasible and could have a significant impact to the sustainable development in the field of engineering and construction. The researchers recommend the following for future research: 1. The use of finer particle size of crushed green mussel shells as partial substitute to fine aggregates; 2. Producing other product such as concrete cylinder, concrete beam, paving blocks, etc. with the use of green mussel shells as partial substitute to fine aggregates; 3. Studying the behaviour of mortar with the use of green mussel shells as partial substitute to fine aggregates using different curing method; 4. Using different design mix with the use of green mussel shells as partial substitute to fine aggregates; and 5. Testing the abrasion wear capacity and slip resistance of terrazzo tiles.

|
