PALMA, ADELAIDA LIBREA, Iloilo State College of Fisheries April 2004, Evaluation of the Growth, Survival and Feed Conversion Rates of In-bred Progenies_of Four Strains of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio) in Cages. Adviser: Noel Almirante Armada, D.F. Sci.

This study was undertaken to determine the desirable characteristics of the Majalaya, Sukabumi, Vietnam and Tanay strains of Common carp; evaluate the growth, survival and feed conversion rates of their in-bred progenies in cages; and identify the most desirable strains to be used in the selective breeding program.

The desirable characteristics of the four strains were determined using meristic (regularity of the fins) and morphometric (coloration, scale formation, lateral line formation and stereo-somatic indexes) measurements; and economic value (slaughter value and fat content analysis).

Growth, survival and feed conversion rates of the in-bred progenies were evaluated by conducting progeny testing using the modified Randomized Complete Block Design for single factor experiment. The strains were the only variable representing the treatments and the cages corresponded to the treatment replicates. The cages were stocked at a rate of 2 pes/sq m and fed with floating pellets at the rate of 3% of the body weight. Culture period lasted for four months.

Results of the study showed that the Tanay strain (TS) had better body form in terms of profile index (2.91); the highest rate of growth in terms of weight (0.4 g/day); highest feed conversion efficiency (FCR of 1.32) and better slaughter value (71%).

The Sukabumi strain (SS)had the lowest fat content (0.5%) and the highest survival rate (78.3%). The Majalaya strain (MS) had the highest growth in terms of length and the smallest head (3.17 head index). Vietnam strain (VS) was the poorest performing strain.

Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that Tanay strain was the best performing strain while the Sukabumi and Majalaya strains both had desirable characteristics which could contribute to the selective breeding program
|
