The report, "Corn Production Through Application of Urea and Ammonium Sulphate (IPB Variety 1), was an income generating project initiated by the author under the Farm Practice Program at the Don Severino Agricultural College. This was conducted at Kaytambog, Indang, Cavite from June 1987 to February 1988 in the field of Mr. Rosendo Vicedo his farmer-cooperator. An area about 2,500 square meter field was plowed and harrowed two times at an interval of one week to allow weed seeds to germinate and other trashes to decay. The last plowing was followed by harrowing to ensure the levelling of the land. Planting was done on October 24, 1987. Two seeds of corn (IPB Variety 1) were planted in the fur-rows 50 centimeters apart and 30 centimeters between hills and at a depth of eight centimeters. Weeding was employed when weeds appeared in the project especially during the early stages of germination, Cultivation was done by off-barring three weeks after planting to kill weeds and loosen the soil. Split application of fertilizer followed. First fertilization was by basal method done by broad-casting. One-half of the total amount of Ammonium Sulphate was applied during planting time and the other half was applied when the plants were almost knee-high. Harvesting was done on February 13, 1988 or about one hundred fifteen days after planting. The method of shelling with the use of "yadyaran" was adopted. One week of continuous exposure of husked corn ear to sunlight was used as a method of drying. After shelling, kernels were stored in sacks and marketed at Indang Public Market. |
