Summary, etc. MOMANYI, DENNIS N. CHALLENGES AND ADAPTATION MECHANISMS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, ITS RELATIONSHIP TOWARDS FLEXIBLE LEARNING IN CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-
2021.Undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. July 2021.Adviser: Prof. Evelyn M Del Mundo, PhD, RN

A study was conducted to determine the challenges and adaptation mechanisms of international students, its relationship towards flexible learning in Cavite State University. The study described the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, civil status, ethnicity, religion, and monthly family income. Moreover, it identified the challenges and adaptation mechanisms of the respondents; the significant relationship between the challenges of the respondents to flexible learning; adaptation mechanisms to the challenges; and finally, the challenges and adaptation mechanisms of the respondents to flexible learning.

The study utilized quantitative methods, simple random sampling technique, and a modified questionnaire with a Cronbach alpha of 0.913. The respondents were invited by a google form link via social media. Collected responses were tallied and treated using: frequency distribution, percentage, mean, Fisher’s Exact Test, Spearman rank Correlation Coefficient, and 4-Point Likert Scale.

The majority of the respondents (63.6%) belonged to the 18-24 years old age bracket, male (60.6%), single (97%), Seventh day Adventist (39.5%), while the 45.5 percent obtained a monthly family income bracket of below $10K, then the respondents taking BS Nursing (21.21%) and 97 percent were of African origin.

The results affirmed that the respondents were highly challenged in six dimensions: teaching strategies, mode of learning, completion of requirements, social relationship, communication/connectivity, graduation and other ceremonies (x̅=3.09) and used different adaptation mechanisms ranging from (x̅=2.85) to (x̅=3.33).

Furthermore, the result revealed that there is no significant relationship between the challenges of the respondents to flexible learning, the Fisher’s Exact Test. p- value of 0.662 > 0.05 level of significance. Similarly, there is no significant relationship between the adaptation mechanisms of the respondents to flexible learning, p-value of 0.2946 > 0.05 level of significance. A moderate positive correlation between the adaptation mechanisms and the challenges of the respondents was revealed (the p- value 0.000 <0.05 level of significance).

The researcher recommended that a comparative study may be conducted in other countries with a different population, method, and research design. University
administrators to devise programs that offer online counseling to students. Students
and faculty members may develop healthy routines such as healthy eating, exercise,
and adequate sleeping to upkeep their mental and physical health.

Key words: International students, flexible learning, online learning, challenges, and adaptation mechanisms
