Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, July 2019. Adviser: Dr. Camilo A. Polinga.<br/><br/>A biomass pelletizer was designed, fabricated, and evaluated to produce pellets from agricultural wastes, specifically coffee husks and spent coffee grounds. It converts agricultural wastes and by-products into high density and energy-rich pellets. It consists of an intake hopper, pelleting chamber, output chute, prime mover, power switch and frame.<br/><br/>The machine works on a principle of a rotating roller pellet mill where power is transmitted from the electric motor to the speed reducer then to the rotating shaft which urges the rollers to drift. A knife facilitates easy detachment of pellets from the die plate. A perforated pellet chute (4-mm mesh) enables the separation of pellets from fines. The machine can produce pellets at a capacity of 1.50 kg/h at an efficiency of 92.49 percent, suitable for small-scale pellet production. A low capacity was observed in the machine primarily due to the low gear speed, which caused occasional stops on the rotation of the rollers and uncontrolled feeding during operations. Pellets have almost uniform characteristics and performed well in the ignition test. It has an average length of 9.86 mm and diameter of 5.71 mm. The average moisture content of the pellets is 16.65 percent (dry basis) and a bulk density of 85 kg/m*. The total cost of the machine is Php34,496.00. The cost analysis showed that the investment on the biomass pelletizer is financially viable.<br/> |
