Costa, PhD.<br/>This study was conducted in order to assess the English proficiency level of grade six<br/>pupils in District Ill, City of Bacoor, Cavite with regard to the teaching strategies and their<br/>academic performance and to determine the problems that they encountered in learning the<br/>language.<br/>Specifically, the study aimed to : (1) determine socio-demographic profile of the students<br/>according to sex, parent's highest educational attainment, family income and type of school, (2)<br/>define socio-demographic profile of the teachers according to sex, highest educational<br/>attainment, family income and type of school currently employed (3) identify teaching strategies<br/>used in teaching English, (4) know the level of english proficiency of the participants, (5) identify<br/>the academic performance of the panicipant, (6) determine the significant difference in the<br/>teaching strategies when grouped to according to sociodemographic profile, (7) distinguish the<br/><br/>significant difference in the level of english proficiency when grouped according to socio-<br/>demographic profile and (8) know the relationship between english proficiency and academic<br/><br/>performance of the panicipants.<br/>The study was a descriptive- correlational type of research. Data are gathered by using<br/>a survey questionnaire about the socio- demographic profile, strategies used in teaching<br/>English, academic performance of the participants on the latest grading period, English<br/>proficiency and test proper that contain the standardized test about English proficiency with the<br/>specific skills in English particularly in the areas of (a) grammar, (b.)<br/>word analogy, (c) identifying errors, (d) paragraph development and (e) reading<br/>comprehension cited from MSA National Achievement Test (NAT ) Reviewer for Grade Six<br/>by Merle S. Alferez. Participants are grade six pupils from public and private schools of<br/>schools of District Ill, City of Bacoor, Cavite. The study comprised of 441 pupilparticipants<br/>with 333 and 108 public and private pupils, respectively.<br/><br/>Data gathered were analyzed using F-test or One Way INOVA, Chi-Square,<br/>Contingency Coefficient, Pearson Product Correlation Coefficient, Mean, Frequency and<br/>Percentage, Phi-coefficient and T-test for independent samples.<br/>The findings of the study stated that majority of the participants were females; from<br/>public schools; had family income of 10,000 and below and parents' highest educational<br/>attainment were college graduates. While their teachers are mostly females; had 20,001 to<br/>30,000 monthly income; college graduate and had 4 years and above teaching experince.<br/>Teacher's teaching strategies as perceived by the students revealed that visualization was<br/>the most commonly used while as perceived by the teachers Technology in the classroom<br/>was the common strategy applied during lessons while differentiation, behavior management<br/>and collaborative learning were the least. The study showed that the total English proficiency<br/>level of the participants was "Moderately Satisfactory". The academic performance if both<br/>public and private students was "Satisfactory". The significant difference in the teaching<br/>strategies when grouped according to socio-demographic in ( l .) sex, (2) type of school, (3)<br/>family income and (4) parent's highest educational attainments; there is a significant<br/>difference between sex and the teaching strategies of differentiation and technology in the<br/>classroom; there is a significant difference between type of school and the teaching<br/>strategies of visualization, collaborative learning, technology in the classroom and behavior;<br/>there is a significant difference between family income and the teaching strategies of<br/>technology in the classroom; lastly, there is a significant difference between parent's<br/>educational attainment and the teaching strategies of differentiation. The significant<br/>difference in the level of English proficiency when grouped according to sociodemographic<br/>profile shows that there is no significant difference when grouped according to sex; there is a<br/>significant difference when grouped according to type of school; there is a significant<br/>difference when grouped according monthly family income and when grouped according to<br/>parents highest educational attainment. There was a significant relationship between the<br/>level ofEnglish proficiency when grouped according to academic performance of the<br/>participants. |
