BARONA, JENNIELYN Y., LIGOT, NERILYN B., ULTRA, JASPER A., YCOY, LOVELY ANGEL
C. Knowledge and Utilization of Ten DOH-Approved Herbal Medicines Among Parents in the City
of Dasmarinas, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.
Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2021. Adviser: Ms. Karen Krista M. Escobar, RMT,
MSMT. Herbal medications are commonly utilized in the Philippines due to disparities in health-care
provision, accessibility, and affordability, as well as their relatively low cost, diversity, adaptability, and low
side effects when compared to synthetic medicines. Herbal medicines' growing popularity and use
necessitates proper monitoring and evaluation. However, several herbal remedies are not well
documented in the Philippines, despite various investigations, especially in terms of their safety, efficacy,
and quality. Thus, knowledge of the communities regarding herbal medicines should be collected and
collated with the participation of the community itself. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and
utilization of 10 DOH-approved herbal medicines among parents in the City of Dasmarinas, Cavite.
Specifically, this aimed to determine the socio-demographic profile of parents, their knowledge regarding
herbal medicines in general, the 10 DOH-approved herbal medicines and its amount to be used, and
their utilization in terms of consumption, duration of treatments, and source. Lastly, to assess the
relationship among the socio-demographic profile and knowledge, socio-demographic profile and
utilization, and knowledge and utilization. This was conducted from March 2021 to May 2021.
A quantitative descriptive correlation research design was utilized for data collection, from which
the researchers selected respondents using purposive sampling. The main tool used to gather data was
a survey questionnaire, which included dichotomous questions and a checklist made accessible to
different platforms through Google Forms and as well as a hard copy version of the questionnaire to
accommodate the availability of the parents. Majority of the respondents were 45 to 53 years old, female, attained secondary education,
unemployed with a monthly income of 10,957 and below and are Roman Catholic. Results showed that
parents in the City of Dasmarifias, Cavite were knowledgeable regarding herbal medicines in general
and all the 10 DOH-herbal medicines and their amount to be used. Majority of the parents utilized the
leaves of herbal medicines, as brewed tea which was consumed once a day with the duration of less
than five days where their source was mostly from backyards. Further, the age of the parent has been found to be related to one's knowledge regarding herbal
medicines. In addition, educational attainment has also been identified to be associated with one's
utilization of herbal medicines. In terms of linking the ways on how the parents consume herbal
medicines, one's monthly income and religion was detected to be correlated with one another. In
addition, when selecting the duration of treatment and the source of the selected herbal medicines, a
parent's monthly income was found to be relevant. Finally, the relationship between knowledge and
utilization of parents have significance in terms of the association of knowledge with parts being used,
duration of treatment using herbal medicines and source of herbal medicines.
In accordance with the results of the study, it was recommended for the parents to retain their
knowledge and educate their children, implement health programs and seminar to other municipalities
that can be led by Sangguniang Kabataan for the younger generation and to include other herbal
medicines that are not listed among the top 10 DOH-approved herbal medicines to cover the breadth
and depth of traditional knowledge about herbal medicines in the Philippines. |
