GABRIEL, ZIONNELLE., EFFECTS OF FEED RATIONS WITH VARYING INCLUSIONS
OF PELLETED MALUNGGAY LEAVES AND STALK (Moringa oleifera) AS FEED
ALTERNATIVE ON THE PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS QUALITY OF
RABBITS (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Undergraduate Thesis, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,
Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser Emmanuel D. Mago, DVM, MS.
The study was conducted to determine the effects of feed rations with varying inclusions
of pelleted malunggay leaf and stalk on the production performance and carcass quality of
rabbits. Specifically, the study aims to: determine the effects of the feeds rations with varying
inclusions of pelleted malunggay leaf and stalk in terms of average daily gain (ADG) and feed
conversion efficiency (FCR) of rabbits, carcass quality characteristic of rabbits through
organoleptic sensory test and dressing percentage; and in terms of crude fat and protein
content of rabbit meat. A total of 24 rabbits of 8 weeks of age were used in this study. Then each
treatment was replicated twice with 2 rabbits per replicate. The average daily gain, feed
conversion ratio and carcass quality of meat were gathered and analyzed. Results of the study
revealed that the feed rations with varying inclusions of pelleted malunggay leaf and stalk as a
feed alternative in rabbits had statistical differences among treatments the rabbits. In addition,
the lower ratio of 25% PMLS with the 75% of commercial feeds may somewhat increase the
growth efficiency of the rabbits and increase its crude protein.
In fact, the lower ratio of the supplemented PMLS had the better growth performance and
a higher crude protein and a slightly high crude fat. This result may be brought about by the high
level of commercial pellets present with the PMLS which may promote an increase of growth
efficiency. With regard to the quality of the rabbit meat, Treatment 2 may also prove to be of a
good outcome on the lean meat of the rabbit since it is most moderately liked in terms of flavor
based on the organoleptic test outcome. Lastly, the use of 25% of PMLS in the diet of rabbits did
not give a positive and efficient outcome on the rabbits used in the said treatment based on the
study due to factors of pellets palatability and the initial body weight of treatment group was
already heavy which were supposing factors that contribute to this result and thus, it had no
effects on the production performance. |
