Summary, etc. |
MOJICA, DAN NICO P. The Effect of 1,3/1,6 Beta Glucan on Canine Parvovirus Antibody Titer After Vaccination in Puppies in Selected Veterinary Clinics in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, June 2022. Adviser: Melbourne R. Talactac, DVM, MS, PhD.

There are varieties of natural health supplements that are commercially available in the market. One of these supplements is the 1,3/1,6 B-glucan, which has an immunomodulating effect on humans and animals. In the Philippines which is a tropical country and with a high population of dogs favors the transmission of Canine Parvovirus (CPV), especially in young unvaccinated dogs. Suspected CPV infections are commonly encountered in veterinary clinics even if the dogs are vaccinated. Furthermore, measuring the antibody titer of the animal is not routinely done due to financial concerns of the clients. In this study, dogs treated with 1,3/1,6 ß-glucan was examined to determine the effect of the supplement to the CPV antibody titers of dog’s post- vaccination. A total of 47 dogs were recruited for the study and distributed into two groups. Control group composed of 24 dogs received no treatment while the treatment group (23) received 1,3/1,6 B-glucan supplementation for the whole duration of the study. Both groups were vaccinated with a multivalent vaccine at Day 0 and day 14. At day 28, supplementation was terminated and serum samples from all the dogs were subjected to indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) assay to determine any effect of 1,3/1,6 B-glucan supplementation to CPV antibody response. Fourteen days after the second priming dose of multivalent vaccine, no significant difference in the CPV antibody titer was observed between the two groups. It is also notable that maternal antibodies were detected at Day 0 in 74% of puppies from both groups. Additionally, better immune response was observed in pure breed dogs, regardless of grouping than mixed breed dogs .
|
