Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, May 2022. Adviser: Adrian Miki C. Macalanda DVM, PhD. <br/><br/> This study was made with the aim to establish a data set about dog owners' awareness on these zoonotic ectoparasites. To help provide the office of the provincial veterinarian a data set that can contribute to creating a better plan to prevent and control these ectoparasites. A cross-sectional questionnaire was given to 400 dog owners to measure their level of knowledge, awareness and understanding of these zoonotic ectoparasites living in the external body of their dogs in the Cavite Province, Philippines. The objective of this study is to create a data set showing the basic knowledge of dog owners in these zoonotic ectoparasites that can transmit diseases not just to their pets but also to them. The overall percentage showed that 86.5% of the respondents were ages 13-30, 65% Females were the majority dog owners of Cavite Province. Cavite Province respondents had a fair score meaning that only half of them had enough knowledge and awareness with these ectoparasites that could transmit zoonotic disease to the owners. This was concerning especially to those dog owners who did not had veterinary access. 42% don't used any ectoparasite preventive and it was concerning that 65% of the owners who used an ectoparasite preventive don't even knew what kind of ectoparasite it prevents. Forty-four percent don't believe or never heard of these zoonotic diseases which was concerning because of the fact that these diseases could spread between animals and humans. This study also shows that the respondents have high compliance and willingness to cooperate if there were any free public awareness campaigns implemented within their municipality to educate dog owners more, in which 79% of the owners agreed that these zoonotic ectoparasites are easier to prevent and control if all owners knew more about these ectoparasites.<br/> |
