MOJICA, VON MELVIN A., PEJI, VICTOR ROMAN S., and PENALBA, GLAIZA M. Effects of Peer Pressure and Demographic Profile to the Health Status of Fourth Year High School Students in Selected Private Schools in Indang, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Cavite State University, April 2011. Advisers: Ms. Divina Joy Tuzon, RN, MSN and Mr. Rolando Antonio, RN, MAN.

The general purpose of this study was to determine the effects of peer pressure and demographic profile to the health status of fourth year high school students in selected private schools in Indang, Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to identify the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, body mass index, and daily allowance. It also aimed to identify the type of peer pressure, the negative effects of peer pressure and the health risks from the negative effects of peer pressure among the respondents. Finally, this study intended to determine the significant relationship between the negative effects of peer pressure and demographic profile to the health status of fourth year high school students of selected private schools in Indang, Cavite.

Descriptive-correlational research design was applied in the study. Two hundred sixty-seven respondents from the three private schools, namely: Saint Gregory Academy, Lycee de San Antonio, and Perpetual Cavite Institute, were selected through simple random sampling. The data and information were gathered through the use of non-standardized questionnaires employing the Spearman Coefficient analysis.

The results revealed that majority of the respondents (53.2%) are female, and that most of them is aged 15 (58.6%) with a daily allowance of 91-100 pesos (33%) under the normal category range of body mass index (18.51-20.00) which constituted 52.4% of the total population. It was also found that a positive type of pressure was present in the respondents owing their food preference, hobbies/ interest, and vices. On the other hand, negative effect in accordance to the respondents’ food preference and vices was discovered since they eat in fast food chains and they smoke with their peers. These result indicated that the respondents may possibly develop health risks like cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and certain form of cancers when not controlled. Finally, this study revealed that gender and body mass index, and smoking has a significant relationship to each other.

Positive peer pressure exists among the fourth year high school students in selected private schools in Indang, Cavite.
