Summary, etc. CLIMACOSA, JOAN PAYTON. Diplomatic Trade and Investment Initiatives of the Philippines and Indonesia towards The Netherlands. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in International Studies major in European Studies. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. November 2010. Adviser: Dr. Ruperto S. Sangalang.

This study was conducted to: (1) identify the diplomatic trade and investment initiatives of the Philippines and Indonesia towards The Netherlands in relation to The Netherlands assistance programs for development projects, (2) identify the initiatives of the business communities of the Philippines and Indonesia towards The Netherlands under The Netherlands assistance programs for development projects from 2004 — 2008, and (3) compare the diplomatic trade and investments initiatives of the Philippines and Indonesia in relation to The Netherlands in terms of (a) exports, (b)imports, (c) trade balance, and (d) foreign direct investments.

Comparative analysis was used to have deeper insights on the diplomatic trade and investment initiatives of the Philippines and Indonesia towards The Netherlands. The data were gathered through research of secondary data from different government agencies and private institutions such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Trade and Industry, and The Netherlands Embassy to the Philippines. Additional data were gathered from the official websites of the Philippine Embassy to The Netherlands, Indonesian Embassy to The Netherlands, Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agency for International Business and Cooperation of The Netherlands, Central Bank of the Philippines and Bank of Indonesia. The data gathered covered the years 2004 to 2008.

The Philippines and Indonesia had several common trade and investment agreements under the Official Development Assistance of The Netherlands. The main provisions of the Agreements includes modalities to promote and develop the growth of country’s products and services in the world market; promote inward foreign investments; provide commercial intelligence to government and industry sectors; and assist in bilateral and multilateral trade and economic negotiations.

In terms of business project proposals with The Netherlands, the Philippines logged behind Indonesia with the former having eight limited projects focused on agriculture and energy sector while Indonesia had 23 projects under various sectors like agriculture, industry, transport/infrastructure and decorative industry.

Moreover, in terms of total trade, exports and balance of trade, the Philippines has a huge advantage over Indonesia while in terms of imports Indonesia has an advantage over the Philippines having a lower amount of imports from The Netherlands.

Likewise, in terms of foreign direct investments (FDIs), Indonesia is at an advantage over the Philippines with almost a hundred percent higher than the FDIs of the Philippines for the year.

As a result, the Philippines need to adopt global standards in trade, evaluate new industrial policy and fiscal incentives that are needed to encourage FDI inflows. This is also a need to make use of the SMEs in the supply chain that will attract foreign investments.
