DELLONA, ANN CATHERINE SALVILLA., EMELO, CAMILLE ABADAM., GUINTO, TIMOTHY PAUL ALMARIO., KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES OF MOTHERS TOWARD NEWBORN SCREENING FROM SELECTED BARANGAYS OF ROSARIO, CAVITE. Undergraduate thesis, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2010. Advisers: Dr. Annie M. Ramos. and Mrs. Nenita B. Panaligan.

This study was about “Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Mothers toward Newborn Screening from Selected Barangays of Rosario, Cavite” that aimed to: 1) determine the demographic profile of the mothers in terms of age; background; religion and working status; 2) recognize the level of knowledge of the mothers in terms of their awareness on the importance of newborn screening and its procedure; 3) identify the attitude of the mothers regarding the screening; 4) determine the practices of mothers toward newborn screening; 5) know the level of compliance the mothers (acceptance, awareness or refusal) toward newborn screening; 6) determine the source of information concerning newborn screening; 7) assess the existing relationship between the demographic profile and the knowledge of the mothers toward newborn screening; 8) recognize the difference in the attitude of the mothers regarding newborn screening in terms of their demographic profile; 9) ascertain the relationship of practices of the mothers and their compliance on newborn screening.

The study utilized the descriptive method of research wherein 68 mothers with two or more children were selected as respondents through quota sampling. They came from Wawa, Sapa and Tejeros Convention, Rosario Cavite. Data were gathered using a questionnaire composed of 36 questions and divided into six parts. These were statistically treated using frequency distribution and weighted mean, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test.

Most of the respondents were knowledgeable on where newborn screening takes place, how the procedure is done, when it is performed, and what newbom screening is all about. However, they were less knowledgeable on the illnesses that the screening detects, the exact cost of newborn screening, the equipment used in newborn screening, the persons who collect the sample and when the results can be taken. |

The mothers are not mistrustful on health care providers, indolence in seeking hospital or health center, and disregarding the programs in newborn screening as their attitude toward newborn screening. However, they were timid in asking information about the screening and hesitant in complying with newborn screening.

The most common factors that affect the practices of the mothers toward newborn
screening were the family’s health traditions. They less consider their religious beliefs, having a relative who has a child with illness and not newbom screened and the baby might get hurt as a factor. Most of the mothers were non-compliant and had not undergone newborn screening yet.

The findings of the study revealed that 1) there is no existing relationship between age and educational background in the knowledge of the mothers towards newborn screening; 2) there is no significant difference in the attitude of the mothers regarding newborn screening in terms of their demographic however the mothers religion has significant towards their attitudes on newborn screening, and lastly 3) there is no significant relationship of practices of the mother and the response to newbom screening. |
