CORONADO, TRISHA ANNE F., SALVACION, MA. GIEBELLE R., and TRINIDAD, BERNADETTE ANN N. Compliance to Nursing Practices Standard in the Control of Transmission of Communicable Diseases among Staff Nurses in selected Hospital in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2013. Adviser: Ms. Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN.

This study was conducted to identify the participants demographic profile in terms of age, sex, educational attainment, hospital/institution working, department/ward assigned, number of month/years working in the institution; assess the nursing practices standard done by the nurses to control the transmission of communicable diseases; assess the probable causes for the non-performance of certain nursing practices standard; and determine the relationship of the socio-demographic profile of the nurses to their practices standard.

The data gathered were tallied, interpreted, and statistically analysed. Frequency and percentage were used to present the demographic profile. To present the practices standard done by the nurses, weighted mean was used and Pearson R was used to describe the relationship of the socio-demographic profile of the nurses to their practices and compliance. One the other hand, ANOVA was used to test the significant differences of nursing practices. Differences of means were tested using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

A set of questionnaires was adapted from the Infection Control Nurses Association: Audit tools for monitoring infection control standards and modified by the researchers containing two parts, the first part consists of the demographic profile of the participants and the second part consists of the nursing practices standard done by the nurses.

Based on the study it was revealed that among 165 participants, 60.6percent belong to the age group ages 20-25 years old. 32.7percent of the total population were
female, who finished their BSN degree and RN’s at 93.9percent. Most of the participants were in their first two years of service in the hospital.

The socio-demographic profile of the participants shows that there is no relationship with the compliance of their practices. It also shows that only the area of the hospital has the relationship in performing certain nursing practices standard.

The study presented that there is high compliance in hand hygiene. In using of personal protective equipment there is also high compliance. High compliance resulted in respiratory hygiene/ cough etiquette. However, there is very high compliance in safe handling and disposal of sharps. In management of patient equipment, there is very high compliance. Lastly, there is also very high compliance in departmental waste handling
and disposal.

The study showed the significant relationship in the practice among staff nurses assigned in clinical area in selected hospitals. Therefore based on the findings; the following are strongly recommended: that the respondents should attend different seminars and trainings that can provide additional knowledge and skills to enhance the compliance to nursing practices standard in controlling the transmission of communicable diseases, the Chief Nurse/Head Nurse/Supervisor of the hospital should supervise and strictly implement the standard nursing procedure approved by the hospital management, orient the staff nurse about the Standards on Nursing Practices in the Philippines approved by the duly authorized officers, PNA, ANSAP, the hospital should have manual of nursing procedures of policies available in the station/ward for review. Ensure that staff nurses are informed about this protocol, to conduct a similar study with all other hospitals in Cavite both public and private hospitals and compare its results. |
