BAYUNGAN, EUNICE GAYLE B., FABRE, KAYE MIKHAELA D., LAURELES,
ALLIAH FRANCES B. Sociocultural Adaptation of Selected Filipino International Students in Canada. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in International Studies Major in European Studies. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. August 2022. Adviser: Ms. Alysa Marri Pabalan.
The study was conducted among 30 participants Filipino international students in Canada from December 24, 2021, to January 14, 2022. This determined the demographic profile of the respondents, level of competency to given situations under four domains of sociocultural adaptation, length of stay in Canada impacts level of competency, the specific domain of sociocultural adaptation they adjusted the most and least, and how they manage the least adjusted domain of sociocultural adaptation as Filipino international students in Canada. Specifically, the study aimed to (1) determine the demographic profile of the participants in terms of age, sex, educational level, and length of stay in Canada, (2) identify the level of competency to given situations under the four domains of sociocultural adaptation as Filipino international students in Canada; (3) determine if their length of stay in Canada impacts level of competency; (4) determine the most and the least adjusted specific domain of sociocultural adaptation, and (5) determine how they manage the least specific domain of sociocultural adaptation as Filipino international students in Canada. Quantitative research, particularly descriptive method of research was used to analyze the results of the study while non-probability sampling method, specifically, purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants. A total of 30 participants Filipino international students who have been studying in Canada acted as participants of the study.
Majority of the participants' age ranged from 15 to 34, 63.3 percent were female, and 36.7 percent were male, 86.7 percent were college students, and the remaining 13.3 percent were senior high school students, and their length of stay in Canada ranged from 1 week to 14 years. Therefore, the overall competency of the sociocultural adaptation on average was moderately competent.
Out of 30 Filipino international students, 96.7 percent answered yes that their length of stay in Canada impacts their level of competency, while the remaining 3.3 percent answered no that their length of stay in Canada didn't impact their level of competency. The most adjusted domain of sociocultural adaptation based on the answers of Filipino international students is personal interests and community involvement, of 33.33 percent. On the other hand, the least adjusted domain of sociocultural adaptation based on the answers of Filipino international students was interpersonal communication of 16.67 percent. The researchers found out that the interpersonal communication was the least adjusted domain and in order to handle this, the respondents needs to get out of their comfort zone and make small talk even at the very least unexpected moments to have a conversation that led them to be able to interact with anyone no matter the race, age, etc.
|
