Summary, etc. MATEL, SHERLENE KHAE M; PINPIN, GEORGE FRANCO C; VERGARA, VIDETTE A. Effectiveness of Feeding Program in A. Abadilla Elementary School and Rosario Elementary School in Rosario, Cavite. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2010. Advisers: Czar Genreigh F. Genuino, RN and Nenita B. Panaligan RN, MAN.

A study was conducted in A. Abadilla Elementary School and Rosario Elementary School in Rosario, Cavite to investigate the effectiveness of the feeding program among primary school children. Specifically, this study (a) described the demographic profile of children in two selected public elementary schools in Rosario, Cavite before and after the school feeding program; (b) compared the level of participation in school feeding programs of children from A. Abadilla Elementary School and Rosario Elementary School; (c) compared the educational outcome of children before and after the school feeding program as to attendance, and academic performance; (d) differentiate the body mass index (BMI) of children before and after the school feeding program, (e) differentiated the educational outcome of children before and during the school feeding program; (f) differentiated if there are significant differences in the BMI of children when grouped by age and gender; (g) and determined the relationship between BMI and academic performance of children after school feeding program. Coordination with the principals and teachers of each selected public elementary school was done for the records of attendance and examinations. Primary school children were subjected to anthropometric measurement before and after the feeding program where the target samples were the children who were underweight before the conduct of the feeding program.

Descriptive research design was utilized in this study. A total of 180 primary schoolchildren and 164 primary schoolchildren participated in the school feeding program of A. Abadilla Elementary School and Rosario Elementary School, respectively. Using the Slovin’s formula, computed samples of 124 students from A. Abadilla Elementary School and 116 children from Rosario Elementary School were covered in this study at five percent margin of error.

The study revealed that there were significant differences in the BMI of children before and after SFP, both from 1 %-month SFP of A. Abadilla Elementary School and 3-month SFP of Rosario Elementary School and there was no significant difference in the educational outcome of children in terms of attendance rates and academic performance before and after SFP, irrespective of the duration of the feeding program.
On the other hand, there is no significant difference in the observed change in BMI of children from A. Abadilla Elementary School and Rosario Elementary School when grouped by age and gender and relationship of BMI and educational outcome before and after the school feeding program. In terms of BMI, male children have higher BMI than the female children before the feeding program irrespective of duration. As the feeding program took place, the female children who participated in SFP were already at par with male children.

BMI and academic performance after school feeding program are not related which implies that whether a primary school children gained in BMI, it does not improve the students’ academic performance. Overall, school feeding program for a period of 1 %-month and 3—months promotes health and has positive impact on BMI and health Status of the child but not in their academic performance
