Summary, etc. CRUZ, PIAN PAOLO J., DELA TORRE JR., EDUARDO G., AND FERNANDEZ, CARISSA NEAL FRANCES P. Influence of Social Media on the Level of Knowledge and Adherence of College Students to COVID-19 Protocols in Selected Cavite State University Satellite Campuses: An Assessment. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. January 2023. Adviser: Karen Louela R. Rint, RN, MAN.
This study was conducted from October 2021 to February 2022 in selected satellite campuses of Cavite State University of General Trias, Silang, and Trece Martires City. It primarily aimed to determine the influence of social media on the level of knowledge and adherence of college students within Cavite to COVID-19 protocols. Specifically, it aimed to determine the demographic profile of the participants, assess the level of knowledge and adherence of college students on COVID-19, determine the frequency of social media usage during the community quarantine period and the participants' common sources of social media information, measure the relationship between frequency of social media usage and level of students' knowledge and adherence to COVID-19 protocols, and measure significant statistical differences regarding the levels of knowledge and adherence of college students to COVID-19 protocols in selected Cavite State University satellite campuses.
To analyze the data gathered and support the objectives of the study, it utilized a quantitative descriptive correlational research design. The participants from the selected Cavite State University campuses were determined using purposive sampling technique. Prior to the collection of data, the approval of the ERB was obtained to safeguard the rights and the sensitivities of the participants. Data was then gathered online via Google Forms using a questionnaire adapted from Peng et al. 2020 and modified from the Administrative Order 2020-0015 given by the Department of Health.
Based on the findings of the study, the researchers were able to determine that the majority of the participants were in the age range of 18-25 years old, female, studying Bachelor of Science in Business management and third-year college students.
The participating college students were both knowledgeable and adherent with regards to COVID-19 and its protocols. However, the participants scored low remarks in parts of the questionnaire pertaining to the allowed volume of people, persons susceptible of contracting COVID-19 and healthcare consultations. Most of the participants access social media daily and allot a short number of hours for accessing news and updates about COVID-19. Moreover, the most common device used among the participants are cell phones with Facebook as the most popular social media platform and Facebook posts as the most utilized source of information regarding COVID-19.
Prolonged social media usage may not affect the levels of knowledge and adherence of college students to COVID-19 protocols. Moreover, there is no significant statistical difference with regards to the level of knowledge among the selected Cavite State University satellite campuses. However, in terms of the level of adherence among the selected satellite campuses, it was shown that there is a statistical difference in the level of adherence of the college participants toward COVID-19 protocols.
In compliance with the findings of the study, the researchers recommend incorporating and comparing various media that may affect or influence the levels of knowledge and adherence of college students towards the COVID-19 protocols in order to provide a deeper perspective regarding the most effective form of media in influencing health promoting behaviors.
