Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. February 2023. Adviser: Prof- Michele T. Bono.<br/>Stingless bees pollinate a wide variety of plants and crops and are responsible for almost 50 percent of interactions that results in biodiversity conservation; however, identification of stingless bee species could be challenging for beekeepers without resources and proper training with the threat of habitat loss, and land degradation. Identification of the stingless bee species is vital for conservation practices and meliponary management. This study was conducted to identify the stingless bees in selected meliponaries in Cavite based on morphological characteristics, hive entrance, and brood layers. This study also assessed the beekeeper's local knowledge about meliponiculture- Samples were preserved in an ethanol solution and was initially identified by carefully examining the stingless bees' general and distinct morphological characteristics, as well as hive entrance and brood layers. Content analysis was used to analyze the interview questionnaire. The identified stingless bee species in selected meliponaries in Cavite is Tetragonula biroi based on its unique phenotypic characters, hive entrance, and brood layers. Beekeepers were sourcing their colonies from Indang, Quezon, and Lipa, Batangas and are knowledgeable in producing byproducts and colony management but is lacking in species' awareness of variation and identification. Identification of species provides more insights about stingless bees' variation and help the local beekeepers to manage, understand, and enhance their methods of cultivating stingless bees.<br/> |
