ARAPOL, Heidee E., Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2006. Prevalence Survey of Canine Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis ) in Selected Barangays of Indano. Cavite. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, Indang, cavite. .Adviser: Anna dL. Lalusis, DVM, MPH.
A survey to determine the prevalence of canine heartworm Dirofilaria immitis was conducted in selected barangays of Indang, Cavite. A total of 192 blood samples from randomly selected dogs were tested for the microfilaria of D. immitis using Modified Knott's test. The result showed that 16 out of 192 blood samples were microfilaremic with 8.3% prevalence rate. Bancod with 3.6% prevalence rate was noted to have the highest rate, followed by 3.1% in Pulo; 1% in Mahabangkahoy Cerca: S% in Agus-os and 0% in Calumpang Lejos, Guyam Munti, Kayquit 111, Poblacion 11, Tambo Malaki. Several factors which affect the prevalence of infection in the area were noted, which include the presence of mosquito (A. ampti, A. alhopicius, C quiquifirscierm.v) as vector of the disease, density of stray dogs in urban areas, number of infective larvae and periodicity of microfilaria. Risk factors for the occurrence of D. immitis were also considered in the study including age, sex, type of rearing, breed, diet and microfilaricidal medication. Highest prevalence proportion of heartworm infection with 33.3% was obtained in dogs 15-17 years of age. A prevalence ratio of 1.5 is noted between male and female in relation to the risk factors for dirofilariasis. Based on type of rearing, dogs reared outdoors has higher prevalence proportion of 9.3% compared to cage-confined dogs with 6.3%. No occurrence of infection was noted in dogs that reared indoors. Prevalence proportion of heartworm infection of 9.20% was obtained in mixed breeds of dogs. An estimated 8.6% prevalence proportion was obtained in dogs fed with table scraps and 0% for dogs fed with commercially available pet foods. Risk for heartworm infection regarding filaricidal medication was not evaluated. In this study. the risks associated with the occurrence of heartworm, resulting to its prevalence, were mainly brought about by complex factors between host and parasite such as age resistance. exposure time to mosquito vector and general health status of the animal.
It is therefore recommended, to conduct further studies as to the occurrence of D. immitis to provide elaborated information that will enhance understanding, thus will aid in the formulation and implementation of the preventive and control measures of the infection.
|
