Summary, etc. DIMACULANGAN, RAMIL R. Cavite State University, lndang, Cavite. April 2006. Isolation, Characterization and Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing of Escherichia call from Cases of Colibacillosis in Pre-weaning Piglets in Cavite State University and Semi-commercial Swine Farms in Indang, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Adviser: Ma. Cynthia N. Rundina, DVM, MS.
A total of 94 pre-weaning piglets less than 30 days old suspected with colibacillosis from Cavite State University and selected semi-commercial swine farms in Indang. Cavite were used in this study. Based on the morpholoLz,ical_ cultural and biochemical characterization, 71.1 0 of the isolates were considered as presumptive Enterotoxigenic Esicherichia coil (ETEC). Mean occurrence rate of ETEC from the Four selected farms reached 6.91% among pre-weaning piglets. By disk-diffusion technique for evaluation of antibiotic sensitivity of the isolates revealed that the test organism were highly susceptible to fosfomycin, enrofloxacin (Baytril®) and colistin (Bioanalyse®). Intermediate action was produced against amoxicillin (Bioanalyse®) and trimethoprim-sulla (Bioanalyse®) which could mean that the concentration or dose of these drugs must be increased for the treatment of clinical cases of colibacillosis to take its effect. Whereas, isolates were found to be resistant to streptomycin (Bioanalyse®), doxycycline (Bioanalyse®) and penicillin (Bioanalyse®) and this could mean that these drugs are no longer effective for the treatment of colibacillosis based on the in vitro technique used.
The result of this study showed that E. coil isolates from cases of colibacillosis in pre-weaning piglets in Cavite State University and semi-commercial swine farms are possibly developing resistance to various antibiotics because of the indiscriminate use of these drugs for the treatment and prevention clinical cases. Thus. good management. proper housing, good biosecurity and sanitation must be employed to avoid colibacillosis. Moreover, conscientious use of antibiotics must be implemented to avoid occurrence of resistant strains.
