VIDALLON, LEONEL SIERRA, Don Severino Agricultural College April 1996. Foliar Fertilizer Application and Different _ Potting Media on Flowering _ of Dendrobium. Major Adviser : Dr. Julio G. Alava.<br/><br/>The study was conducted at the greenhouse of Sujin Orchid Farm, Guinhawa, Tagaytay City primarily to evaluate the effects of different foliar fertilizer and potting media on the flowering of dendrobiun. Specifically, it aimed to (1) determine the most suitable foliar fertilizer and potting media on the flowering of dendrobium, (2) know the responses of dendrobium to different foliar fertilizers and potting media and (3) compare the performance of inorganic and organic foliar fertilizers on the flower production of dendrobium.<br/><br/>The results showed that among the six levels of foliar fertilizers used, Dendrobiums sprayed with Peter’s Special (20 - 20- 20 ) were the earliest to produce flower bud, gave the highest number of spikes and flowers produced and had the highest NPK uptake.<br/><br/>Potting media significantly affected the flowering response of all orchids. Dendrobiums grown in coconut husks were also the earliest to produce flowers , gave the highest number of spikes and flowers and had highest NPK absorption.<br/><br/>Highly significant effect was also noted on the interaction between different foliar fertilizers and potting media on the number of spikes per plant and nitrogen and potassium content per plant. The results further indicated that the inorganic foliar fertilizers had better performance than organic foliar fertilizers. Likewise, when dendrobiums were planted at sphagnum moss , all plants applied with foliar fertilizers gave the poorest results . The results further revealed an increase in flower production with an increase in nutrient elements applied to the plants.<br/><br/>Generally, orchids grown in coconut husks and applied with Peter’s Special (20 - 20 - 20 ) gave the best performance in terms of flower production. The poorest performance was observed from plants grown in sphagnum moss unfertilized.<br/> |
