DIONIDO, LORENA DINO. Cavite state University, Indang, Cavite April 2001 "Profitability of Onion Production in Lemery, Batangas", B.S. Thesis, Adviser: Dr. Maria A. Ersando.
This study was conducted in Lemery, Batangas to describe: (l) the socioeconomic characteristics of onion grower; (2) describe the production and marketing practices employed by the onion growers; (3) determine the level of production as well as the cost and return in producing onion; (4) determine the relationship of some selected variables to profitability; and (5) identify the problems encountered in production and marketing of onions.
The samples from each barangay were determined by using stratified proportional sampling. Individual respondents were identified using fishbowl technique. Data were gathered through personal interviews with 60 respondents with the aid of the prepared questionnaires.
The age of the respondents ranged from 28-83 years with an average of 50 years. Majority of them were male. Most of the respondents were high school graduates with an average household size of 6 members.
The average length of experience in managing the business was twenty-eight years and majority of the respondents were married. The average gross income of the respondents derived from one onion cropping was P 14,719.00. Majority of the respondents revealed that growing onion was their main source of income using their personal savings as capital. The farm size ranged from 150-10,000 sq.m. with an average of 3,614 sq. m.
Farming experience, size of capital, farm size and tenure status were insignificantly related to level of profit.
The production practices employed by the onion growers were land preparation, planting, mulching, application of fertilizer, spraying of pesticide, weeding and cultivation.
The marketing practices employed by the onion growers were packing and transporting, selling, market information and risk bearing.
Respondents marketed the product in the nearby public market with a total of 43,599 kilos of onion. Produced onion were either delivered or picked-up from the farm.
Results of the study revealed that the average gross income obtained from one onion cropping per farm was P 13,229.70 while the average cost of onion production was P6,174.70. The average gross income obtained from one cropping per 5,000 sq. m. was PI 8,303.4 while the average cost of onion production per 5,000 sq. m. was P 8,542.77. The ratio of net income to sales was 0.5 which indicates that for every peso sale of produce, 0.5 centavos of profit was gained.
With regards to marketing, competition was the major problem encountered by the respondents while in production the unfavorable weather condition was the main problem.
|
