CAYAO, CHRISTIAN DEUS T. and DIMAPILIS, JEG ALEX P. Water and Porous Materials as Cooling Media of Non — Freon Air Cooler. Research Study. Science High School, College of Education. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007. Adviser: Engr. Neil T. Penalba.
The study was conducted in one of the researcher's residences at 394 A. Mabini St. Indang, Cavite. It aimed to identify porous materials which can be used as substitute to Freon as cooling media; compare the cooling performance of the cooler using water and porous materials and air cooler using Freon; compare the electric consumption and manufacturing cost of air cooler using water and different porous materials and air cooler using Freon ; and determine the acceptability of non — Freon air cooler based on design and performance.
The non- Freon air cooler was built. The framework of the air cooler was made using aluminum. The porous material container was built using wire mesh and the water container was attached to the bottom of the air cooler. The blower and exhaust fan were placed inside the air cooler and certain wirings were made. The air cooler was covered with aluminum sheets and the air cooler was tested. The different treatments used in the study were: Tl - commercial air cooler, T2 - water and wood shavings, T3 - water and coconut husk and T4 - water and jute sack fiber. The study proved that the developed non- Freon air cooler which used water and porous materials was an effective air cooler which has lower electric consumption and cheaper cost. However, its cooling performance is not as great as that of the commercial air cooler. It was also found that the porous materials can be used as cooling media and T3 - water and coconut husk, wasproven as the best cooling medium. In terms of acceptability of design and performance, the non — Freon air cooler was considered excellent, but it also showed that it may need some improvement in terms of cooling performance and cooling time. It is recommended to conduct studies on how to improve the performance of the air cooler; conduct further studies on the contamination of the porous materials; and identify the factors considered by professionals which were not considered by consumers.
|
