SOLIS, SANTI R. Dairy Cattle Raising Practices at Dairy Training and Research Institute, University of the Philippines, Los Bafios, College, Laguna. Farm Practice Report. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Animal Science, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Prof. Eraiko C. Esguerra.
A farm practice was conducted for the student to gain skills through actual operations of a dairy cattle farm; learn more about the technical aspects of dairy cattle operation; and apply the knowledge theoretically learned from animal science courses. It was conducted in a time span of 400 hours at Dairy Training and Research Institute, University of the Philippines, Los Barios, College, Laguna from April 23, 2007 to May 31, 2007. The DTRI Dairy Cattle Farm has been in operation for 46 years. At present, it has a total dairy cattle population of 182. Australian Friesian-Sahiwal and High-grade Holstein are the breeds raised in the farm. Heifers and bulls are used for breeding at 15 months of age.
Crossbreeding is being practiced in the farm. Heifers and dry cows are inseminated naturally or artificially. Bulls are used for semen collection and used to service cows five times week. Semen is processed in the laboratory and stored in semen tank. Insemination is practiced in the morning and late in the afternoon. The farm purchases its own formulated feed like calf starter and dairy concentrate feeds from Selecta Feeds Inc. Grasses are harvested in the pasture every morning using the forager attached to a tractor. Rice straw and brewer's spent-grains are also fed to cows as alternative feed during summer when roughages are scarce.
Before entering the farm, the personnel or visitor is required to take a shower, change clothes and wear farm boots. Cleaning of pens and houses is done everyday. Disinfection of milking parlor is done every two weeks. Vaccination against Foot and Mouth Disease and Hemosep is a regular routine to prevent and control common diseases of dairy cattle. Milking is done twice a day every 4 o'clock in the morning and in the afternoon. Milk collected is brought directly to the dairy plant for processing. Pasteurized fresh milk, chocolate milk, low fat milk, yoghurt, and white cheese are some of the sumptuous milk products produced by Dairy Training and Research Institute.
|
