DALINO, DEBORAH JOYCE Y. Facebook Use and its Perceived Academic Benefits Among Mass Communication Students of Cavite State University. An undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication Major in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2011, Adviser: Ms. Bonalyn Caisip.

The study aimed to determine the use of Facebook and its perceived academic benefits among Mass Communication students of Cavite State University. Specifically, the study aimed to determine (1) the respondents’ frequency in using Facebook, (2) the respondents' purposes in using Facebook, (3) the respondents’ time spent in studying at home, (4) the academic benefits acquired from using Facebook, and (5) the academic problems respondents encounter from the use of Facebook.

The descriptive method of research was utilized in order to describe the perceived academic benefits. The instrument for collecting data is a questionnaire. The researcher provided a very short questionnaire consisted of open-ended questions by posting it on Facebook and letting her friends answer, while another questionnaire consisted of thirty eight items to be answered by the actual respondents. All of the Mass Communication students were the respondents; 69 from freshmen students, 51 from sophomore students, 31 from junior students, and 29 from senior students. The total number of Mass Communication students is 180 (including the researcher). Twenty students from the same course were selected to answer the pre-test and the post-test so they were exempted from the actual data gathering. The study was conducted during the first and second semesters of academic year 2010-2011. Of the 159 students who answered in the actual data gathering, 153 have been using Facebook for more than 3 months, 4 are using Facebook for more than a month but
less than 3 months and 2 are not Facebook users and they were excluded so the overall population became 157.

Results revealed the hours spend by the respondents on Facebook where 21 spend 4 hours or more, 23 spend 3-4 hours, 36 spend 2-3 hours, 61 spend 1-2 hours, 16 spend less than an hour.

The results indicated that the respondents were undecided or they are not sure to use Facebook for academic purposes; the respondents agreed that they use Facebook to find new friends and to share photos and videos; on the last category, the respondents were undecided if they will Facebook to past time.

The time spent in studying at home where 19 spend 4 hours or more, 22 spend 3-4 hours, 5 spend 2-3 hours, 45 spend 1-2 hours, 16 spend less than an hour.

Most of the respondents agreed that they acquire the following academic benefits listed on the questionnaire by answering yes.

Majority of the respondents believed that they acquire some of the academic problems listed on the questionnaire while the rest believed that they acquire other problems listed on the questionnaire.

|
