April 2003. Advisers: Prof. Eleanor G. Ersando and Prof Dulce L. Ramos<br/><br/>The research study was conducted at one of the authors’ residence at Indang, Cavite from March 5 to March 8, 2003. It aimed to: determine the insecticidal potential of atis seeds against Coffee Bean Weevils; and determine the most effective concentration of atis seed extract.<br/><br/>The reproduction of the CBWs was done at the Crop Protection Laboratory at Cavite State University. The CBWs were subjected to laboratory test by placing ten in each improvised sack per treatment and were subjected to five treatments replicated five times.<br/><br/>The treatments used were: TO - control (acetone); T1 - (75 ml of water and 25 ml of extract); T2 - (50 ml of water and 50 ml of extract); T3 - (25 ml of water and 75 ml of<br/> extract); and T4 - (100 ml of pure extract).<br/><br/>The results showed that T4 (pure extract) and T3 (25 ml of water and 75 ml of extract) were the best concentrations of extract for killing coffee bean weevils although T2 could also kill CBWs. The highest affectivity in killing the CBWs was shown after 72 hours. The descending order of effectiveness was: T4 (pure extract) > T3 (3:1) = T2 (2:1) 2 T1 (1:1). The atis extract proved to have insecticidal effectiveness against coffee bean weevils.<br/><br/>The results of the phytochemical test of the ethanolic atis seed extract showed that it contains moderate amounts of alkaloids, and traces of tannin, which caused the mortality and morbidity of the CBWs.<br/> |
