Data were obtained through personal interview with the 63 bamboo producers with the aid of an interview schedule. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, mean, percentage, cost and return analysis, and ranking.

The results showed that most of the producers were in the adult age, married, high school graduate, male, and had farming as their major source of income. Most of them owned the land devoted for bamboo production.

The cultural management practices of bamboo include site selection, clearing, holing and pre-planting preparation, planting, watering, crop protection, fertilization, pruning, thinning, and harvesting.

In the year 2010, an average of 365 bamboos was harvested while in 2011, an average of 409 bamboos was harvested. Majority of the producers harvested their bamboo in the year 2012 with an average of 664 culms. In the year 2013 the average number of bamboo harvested decreased to 506.

Majority of the bamboo culms harvested in Maragondon and General Emilio Aguinaldo were used as fish traps for tahong and talaba in Bacoor, Kawit, and Cavite
City.

The income of bamboo producers based on 2013 sales ranged from P500 — P25,000 with an average of P6,178 while a bamboo collectors earned an average net income of P40,000 per month. On the other hand, a processor obtained an average net income of P2,170.51 per month.

Only few encountered problems in bamboo production. These problems were low product price of raw bamboo, low returns to producers, high risk involve in transportation, and limited market outlet.

The proposed interventions to improve the bamboo industry include promotion of bamboo cultivation, continuous support and assistance from the government and academic institution, and research and development.
|
