RODILLO, Applied Research III] (General Science Curriculum), Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2004. “PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF OLEORESIN FROM BENGUET PINE (Pinus kesiya L.) IN CAVITE”. Adviser: Mr. Beng P. Umali.<br/><br/>The study, entitled “Physico-Chemical Properties of Oleoresin from Benguet Pine (Pinus kiseya L.) in Cavite” was conducted at the Cavite State University and Forest Products Research and Development Institute, UPLB, Laguna from September 29, 2003 to February 19, 2004. This study aimed to: 1) characterize the resin from Benguet pine (Pinus kesiya L.) in Cavite based on color, appearance, softening point, iodine number, acid number, saponification number and FT-IR analysis; 2) determine the classification of the rosin sample; and 3) determine the percentage yield of oil from Benguet pine (Pinus kesiya L.) resin in Cavite.<br/><br/>The crude resin and its components, gum rosin and gum turpentine were characterized based on color, appearance, softening point, acid number, saponification number, iodine number and were subjected to FT-IR Analysis. The appearance of crude resin was thick, milky yellow and sticky fluid material. Its softening point was 80°C and its saponification number was 184 mg KOH/g. The acid number was 219 mg KOH/g and its iodine number was 135 mg I)/g. The result of the FT-IR analysis showed that crude resin had the functional groups COOH, CH20, CH3CH; and CH,CH) indicating the presence of carboxylic acid, aldehyde, alkane and alkene. Characteristically, the gum rosin was brittle, opaque, glassy solid and pale yellow. Its softening point was 80°C, saponification number was 157 mg KOH/g and the acid number was 189 mg KOH/g. The result of the FT-IR analysis showed that gum rosin had the functional groups COOH, and CH,O indicating the presence of carboxylic acid and aldehyde. The results of the analysis of the gum turpentine showed that its appearance was transparent, anhydrous, and no suspension and its color was not deeper than water-white clear. Its acid number was 1.0 mg KOH/g and the relative density was 0.870. The FT-IR analysis showed that the gum turpentine has the functional groups CH;CH; and CH,CH) indicating the presence of alkane and alkene.<br/><br/>The results revealed that the resin found in Cavite is gum rosin and that 53.44 mL of oil was produced from 228.63 grams of resin which means that the percentage of oil<br/>was 23.37%.<br/><br/> |
