Cavite State University, Science High School, Indang, Cavite. April 2005. Adviser: Ms. Miriam C. Du. Co- adviser: Prof. Dulce L. Ramos.<br/><br/>This study was generally conducted to characterize cytogenetically the four varieties of banana: ‘Bungulan’, ‘Lakatan’, ‘Latundan’, and ‘Saba’. Specifically, it aimed to: describe the chromosomal configurations observed during mitosis and meiosis; determine the mitotic indices for the four varieties of banana; describe the abnormal configurations; and evaluate the pollen fertility of the four varieties of banana.<br/><br/>Anthers of ‘Bungulan’, ‘Lakatan’, ‘Latundan’, and ‘Saba’ were used to study meiosis. On the other hand, their root tips were used to study mitosis. The anthers and root tips were fixed in freshly prepared Farmer’s solution (1 part glacial acetic acid: 3 parts 95% Ethyl alcohol) between 11:00 - 12:00 noon. The usual acetocarmine squash technique was applied to samples to examine cell division.<br/><br/>Results showed that the Mitotic Index (MI) ranged from 75.28 to 81.91 percent. This high percentage implies that there is a high number of cells available for cell division and consequently; more cells are available for growth and development, maintenance and repair of the organism.<br/><br/>In meiosis, ‘Latundan’ obtained a total of 32.12 percent of cells undergoing meiosis I followed by ‘Saba’ with 31.66 percent of cells and ‘Lakatan’ with 30.29 percent of cells. ‘Bungulan’ had the least percentage of cells (29.20%) undergoing meiosis I.<br/><br/>‘Bungulan’ had the highest total percentage of cells (32.14%) undergoing meiosis II while ‘Latundan’ had the lowest with 26. 59 percent of cells.<br/><br/>Pollen fertility was determined to be relatively high except in ‘Lakatan’. The results of pollen fertility signify that the higher the abnormal chromosome behavior, the lower its percent fertility and vice-versa.<br/> |
