Summary, etc. |
The study on the "Effect of Varying amounts of ‘Complete Fertilizers Application on the Growth and Yield of Garlic" was conducted at the Agronomy experimental field of the Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Gavite from November. 1974 to February, 1975. The purpose of the study to determine the best rate of complete fertilizer application for garlic growing under 'Don Severino Agricultural college conditions. An area of 300 square meters Was divided into four equal blocks and further subdivided into 32 plots. There were seven treatments and a control with four replications each. They were distributed at random on the different plots as shown in the field layout (see figure 1). Fertilizers were broadcast and mixed thoroughly with the soils before planting the bulbils. Three shallow furrows were made on every plot, 20 centimeters apart. One bulbil of garlic was planted in every hill, 15 centimeters apart with the tip slightly exposed. Five inches thick of rice straw was spread over the newly planted beds to serve as mulch. The first weeding was done two weeks after planting. This was followed by another weeding a week after and finally one more weeding when the plants had reached their maximum height. ;here was no sign of disease affecting the crops, however there were few insect pests like worms and trips that damaged few plants but were easily controlled by spray-ing 1-01idol. Germination took place after the third day of plan:t ine. the growth of the plants from the first three-weeks in treated plots were vigorous and uniform except in the control, wherein most of the leaves were slightly yellowish and the plants were stunted in growth. As the plants reached the maturity stage, the treated plots with 900 kilograms per hectare of 14-14-14 fertilizer produced the most vigorous plants characterized by dark green leaves and stout stems. they were the tallest among all the treated plants in the experiment.

The plot where 1,200 kilograms per hectare of 14-14-14 fertilizer was applied matured the earliest, as shown by the early drying of most of the leaves and lodging of the stems on the ground. The plants in the, control plots matured the latest. The leaves did not lodge at all on the ground although most of them were already drying up. The crops were harvested 119 days from the time of planting. At this period most of the leaves were already dry. Treatment 6, where 9U0 kilograms of 14-14-14 fertilizer app: lied per hectare was applied gave the highest average yield of dry garlic per plot (1 x 5 meters) among al.. %;treatments in the experiment with 1.985 kilograms or 3,970 kilo ,rags per hectare. The untreated plots cave the lowest average yield with only 1.005 kilograms per plot or 2,070 kilograms per hectare. The trend of the yield per hectare increased as the rate of application of he fertilizer was Increased up to 9uu kilograms per hectare. dowevor, the yield declined after the application of more of this amount of the fertilizer., it was apparent that the best amount of 14-14-14 fertilizer to apply for garlic was 9.)0 kilograms per hectares
|
