Summary, etc. BENZSON CASILI ESCOBIN. Geographic Information System- Based Land Use Mapping and Assessment of the Lowland Areas of Cavite, Undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Dr. Beng P. Umali;

The study was conducted from November 2014 to February 2015 in the lowland areas of Cavite covering the municipalities of Cavite City, Kawit, Noveleta, Rosario and some portions of Imus, Naic, General Trias, Bacoor, Tanza. The study was designed to map and assess the land use of lowland areas of Cavite using GIS.

Specifically, it aimed to: 1. To determine the major land uses in lowland areas of Cavite using landsat imagery, 2. To calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index of the different major land uses; 3. To compare and contrast these land uses using environmental and soil parameters: temperature, rainfall, soil quality (soil color, pH and electrical conductivity).

The major land uses in the lowland areas of Cavite were identified for assessment of land productivity using Landsat® imagery of GIS. After the land uses have been identified, the sampling sites were randomly selected for data collection of the different soil samples. Eighty sampling sites in the lowland areas of Cavite were identified.

Using the unsupervised classification technique, results of the study showed five land uses, namely; residential, grassland, bare land, agricultural and wetland. Air temperature, rainfall, soil parameters (pH, EC, and color), and NDVI varied in these land use.

The study found that for the lowland areas of Cavite, land use that has low vegetation index has high air temperature. Land use with high vegetation index has low air temperature. The study also found that the agricultural area received the highest amount of rainfall than the other land uses. The identified soil pH of the different land uses shows that agriculture has acidic soil which may be attributed to over application of fertilizer in contrast to forested area which has a neutral to alkaline pH level.

From the findings of the study, it is recommended that an updated Landsat® image for more accurate land use identification be done.
