POL, ROMUALDO MANAHAN, Institute of Graduate Studies, Central Luzon State University, Mufioz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, March 2001. GROW-OUT CULTURE OF RIVER CATFISH (Pangasius Sutchi), FOWLER 1937) AT DIFFERENT STOCKING DENSITIES. Adviser: Dr. Tereso A. Abella

This study was conducted to evaluate the growth and survival of river catfish (Pangasius sutchi) reared in cages using different stocking densities and to determined the relationship of the three water quality parameters (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH) on the growth and survival of P. sutchi. Five different stocking densities were used as treatments starting from 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 pcs/m? which were replicated three times.

To produce homogenous experimental fish for this study, artificial propagation or induced breeding of P. sutchi was first conducted using the technology from Thailand with few modification by the BFAR-NIFTC.

The fry produced were transferred in a nursery pond to avail of the natural food present and were fed with supplemental feeds (mixture of ricebran and fishmeal) at 5% of the average body weight of the fish continuously for 30 days.

The grow-out culture experiment was done in cages installed in ponds for 4 months (120 DAYS). Monthly sampling was done to determine growth and survival as well as to adjust the feeds to be given.

Results showed that Treatment 1, with a stocking of 2 pes/m? obtained the highest length and weight gain per day with mean values of 0.12 cm and 0.74 g, respectively. In the growth analysis, the mean gain length and weright of P. sutchi showed significant differences (P < 0.01) among treatments. It was observed that the weight and gain of P. sutchi decreased as density increased while production increased as the number of fish stock increased. There were no significant differences between the survival of P. sutchi reared in cages using the five different stocking densities.

The relationship of the three water quality parameters (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH) to the growth and survival of fish showed that dissolved oxygen had a significant effect on the length and weight of P. sutchi while temperature and pH showed no significant effect.

The coefficient of determination (r°) for the variation in length and weight
of P. sutchi in cages showed 63.16% and 65.89%, respectively, accounted for the variation in temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. For survival, the Coefficient of determination (1?) which showed only 6.44% was accounted for by the variation in temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH.

|
