ARNEZ, MARIZ P. AND MENDOZA, LIEZEL REYZEN R. Growth and Yield of Honey Dew (Cucumis melo var. Diosa F1) using Different Potting Mixes. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Crop Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2015.Adviser: Dr. Celso S. Crucido.
The growth and yield of honeydew in different potting mixes were evaluated by measuring the bi-weekly growth increment, plant height at maturity, number of days from planting to flower formation, number of days from flowering to maturity, weight of fruits per plant, and yield of fruits per hectare. The study was conducted from August 2014 to February 2015 at the Cavite State University Crop Production Nursery, Indang Cavite with an area of 20.42 m x 5.49 m with a distance of 1 m between rows and 0.5 m between pots. The experiment was laid out in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with the following treatments: T1 - 1 part Garden Soil (GS) + 1-part Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH) + 1 Recommended Fertilizer (RF), T2 - 1 part GS + 1-part CRH + 1 Compost (C), T3 - 1 part GS + 1-part CRH + 1 Chicken Manure (CM), and T4 1 part GS + 1-part CRH + 1 Vermicast (V). Each treatment was replicated three times. There were no significant differences during the second week but had significant differences during the fourth week and no significant difference in the sixth week for the bi-weekly growth increment. Highly significant differences were observed in terms of number of days from flowering to maturity, height of plant at maturity, weight of fruits per plant, and yield per hectare. There was no significant difference in terms of the number of days from planting to flower formation.
The potting mix of 1 part Garden Soil (GS) + 1-part Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH) + 1 Recommended Fertilizer (RF) or Treatment 1 obtained the highest weight and yield per hectare of honeydew. However, the potting mix of 1 part GS + CRH + Vermicast (V) or Treatment 4 obtained the second rank in terms of weight and yield per hectare of honeydew, it was followed by potting mix of 1 part GS + CRH + Compost (C) or Treatment 2 and potting mix of 1 part GS + CRH + Chicken Manure (CM) or Treatment 3. Among the potting mixes, T1 was found to have the highest yield per hectare followed by T4, T2, and T3.
|
