MERCURIO, PERRIN B. Organic Production of Crucifers Intercropped with Cucumber and Tomato at DA TechGen Tres Cruses, Tanza, Cavite. Farm Practice Report. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Major in Horticulture. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. April 2011. Adviser: Dr. Adolfo C. Manuel Jr.
A farm practice was conducted at DA TechGen Demo Farm at Tres Cruses, Tanza Cavite for a total of 460 hours. The student-trainee underwent farm practice to: acquire practical experience in organic farm management; perform organic farming practices in producing broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower intercropped with cucumber and tomato including its cost and return analysis; and identify the various problems encountered in producing crucifers mulched with rice straw and polyethylene plastic.
The student was trained on the various techniques in producing organic vegetables such as land preparation, seedling preparation, mulching, transplanting, trellising, blanching, making of organic fertilizer and its application, control of pest and diseases, harvesting and marketing.
The student was able to recognize some serious problems such as continuous spread of insect pests in crucifers (e.g. cabbage worms and diamondback moth), inadequacy of safety measures in the farm and insufficient water supply. After completion of the farm practice, the student recommends immediate solution to the
Problem to reduce losses and improve the quality of organic vegetables.
