This study aimed to determine the possible risks and suggest possible solutions to the identified risks in Indang public market. Specifically, this research study attempted to:
determine the demographic profile of vendors and helpers in Indang public market.
identify hazards in public market at Indang, Cavite; (3) assess the risks that may result because of the hazards in Indang public market; (4) decide on control measures to prevent or minimize the level of the risks; and (5) suggest possible recommendations for the effectiveness of the control measures.
The participants of this study were two hundred sixty-five (265) from both wet and dry sections in the public market of Indang, 196 samples from wet and 69 samples from dry market has been taken. Eighty-three (31.32% of the total participant) of the vendors and helpers were male and one hundred eighty two (68.68%) were female.
Eighteen (21.18%) of the male participants belonged to the age bracket of 18 to 26 years old, fifteen (17.65%) in between 27 to 35 years old, nineteen (22.35%) are between 36 to 44 years old, twenty-five (29.41%) are between 45 to 53 years old, and eight (9.41%) are between 54 years old and above in male participants in Indang public market. Majority of the participants in dry market category (55.07%) were in 0 to 5 years in operating the business and 87 participants (44. 39%) in wet market category were in 0 to 5 years in business.
The identified hazards in Indang public market were classified into six types including safety hazard, physical hazard, biological hazard, ergonomic hazard, chemical hazard, and work organizational hazard.
Through the results of the study, the risk was identified with the aid of risk ranking matrix. From this, majority of the participants rated the identified risks as tolerable. The researchers decided what control measure to be used to minimize the risk of hazards to be able to protect people, property or the environment from the identified hazard.
Most of the risks that resulted as high level of risk came from the behavioral risk (risk from the customers, smoking, customer under the influenced of alcohol), financial risk (risk from thief), organizational risk (poor leadership and management, poor communication, abuse, competitors), environmental risk (accidents from wet floors, accidents from vehicles, diseases that may get from the public market, poor health and safety policies of both vendors and customers, possibility of collapse due to heat stress, unsafe product/unlabeled product, dangerous equipment, sprains and strains, slips, strips and falls, mobbing at the public market, and improper waste disposal).
The risks that resulted as extreme level came from the environmental risk (accidents from wet floors and dangerous equipment, for example box crushers and meat slicers) based on the vendors and helpers of wet market category in Indang public market.
The remaining risks are ranked as tolerable and negligible level of risk.
